15 Celebs Who Hated Doing Their Lovemaking Scenes
We’ve all heard the stories about what it’s really like to film a lovemaking scene. It’s awkward, it’s nerve wracking, it’s embarrassing, and it’s far from sexy. It doesn’t matter if the actors are attractive or unattractive; the experience is rarely one that the actors want to relive. This discomfort with filming lovemaking scenes is completely understandable. Who would want to expose themselves in front of a crew of virtual strangers? Unless you have a fetish for public indecency, it’s a safe bet that you wouldn’t get turned on by the idea of nude scenes under these circumstances. Feeling uncomfortable with such scenes is one thing, but loathing them is another.
Yes, there are those actors who feel more than the usual discomfort with filming lovemaking scenes. They actually hate them. So much so that they won’t even think of filming them again. Some sex scenes can be traumatizing, such as filming a rape or an abusive sexual encounter. Others are loathsome for the disturbing sensory memories they evoke. Think bad smells and unwashed body parts. On this list, you’ll find celebrities who you never imagined would hate their lovemaking scenes so much. But they did, and if you read on, you’ll find out why.
15. Natalie Dormer
Natalie Dormer has never relished getting naked for the camera. In fact, she doesn’t know any actors who have. She argues that any actor who pretends to feel comfortable filming a lovemaking scene is lying through his or her teeth. Natalie stars in Game of Thrones, where there are plenty of raunchy scenes to go around. Despite her convincing performances, she asserts that filming sex scenes is awkward at best. The procedure is unsexy, unglamorous, and unappealing. Perhaps her character’s tragic death in Game of Thrones is a blessing in disguise. Or it might simply have freed her up for new lovemaking scenes to come.
14. Amy Smart
Amy Smart has graciously shared with us why filming a public sex scene for the movie Crank: High Voltage was as awkward as could be. Picture yourself lying on the ground in the middle of a racetrack as screaming fans take pictures of you with their phones. Pictures of you acting out a sex scene with Jason Statham. The key, as Amy explains, is not to think of what could be lurking in the dirt that you and your lovemaking partner are rolling around in. Otherwise, you’re going to be sick. Oh, and brace yourself for a terrible smell.
13. Michelle Williams
Michelle Williams has described her racy scenes with Ryan Gosling in the movie Blue Valentine as toxic. On the one hand, this description makes sense to me, because the couple in the movie is incredibly dysfunctional. On the other hand, it’s Ryan Gosling. What could be toxic about filming a lovemaking scene with that hunk? Michelle admits to having needed an escape from filming these difficult nudie scenes. In this particular case, “escape” translated to driving with the windows rolled down and the music turned up loud, hanging her head out of the window and screaming at the top of her lungs.
12. Justin Timberlake
Who would’ve guessed that the singer of SexyBack wouldn’t relish the opportunity to film a lovemaking scene with a gorgeous woman? The gorgeous woman I’m referring to is Mila Kunis, and the movie is Friends with Benefits. Justin Timberlake claims to have been mostly annoyed by his sex scenes in the film, and by sex scenes in general. They take too long to film, and they’re just plain exhausting. It’s so much work to thrust on cue. Justin blames his age for his less-than-enthusiastic approach to lovemaking scenes. Considering that he was only thirty when Friends with Benefits came out, I’d say that’s a pretty weak excuse.
11. Jake Gyllenhaal
It wasn’t all fun times on the set of Love and Other Drugs, it seems. At least, not for Jake Gyllenhaal. Filming this movie, he was faced with the most difficult challenge of his acting career: pretending to be turned on by Anne Hathaway. Yes, you read that right. Feigning sexual interest in Anne Hathaway was the hardest thing Jake Gyllenhaal’s ever done. Does he dislike filming lovemaking scenes in general? Or is he not into brunettes? With Anne Hathaway’s looks, you would think that it wouldn’t be so hard to act out a racy scene with her. Then again, with hundreds of crew members around, I can understand why Jake might not have been in the mood for romance.
10. Jemima Kirke
Second only to Lena Dunham, Jemima Kirke has probably filmed some of the most shocking sex scenes on Girls. The period scene in Season One comes to mind. Jemima’s admitted that filming these controversial scenes in front of hundreds of people is mortifying. Especially acting out an orgasm, one that sounds so real you couldn’t tell it apart from a fake one. I can totally see how acting out an orgasm in front of a cameraman could be embarrassing. Not many women would volunteer to do it. The important thing is that Jemima sold it for the cameras; I would never be able to tell from watching Girls that she didn’t enjoy every minute of her lovemaking scenes.
9. Vanessa Hudgens
Sweet, innocent Vanessa Hudgens wasn’t ready for a threesome when she left High School Musical behind. But a threesome is what she got by starring in the movie Spring Breakers. Her scene partners were James Franco and Ashley Benson, of the Pretty Little Liars fame. Filming this particular explicit scene was apparently so traumatizing for Vanessa that she told her agent that she never wants to film a lovemaking scene with multiple partners ever again. And she means never. I’m not sure if it was James and Ashley who scared her off from risqué lovemaking, or someone from the crew. Either way, don’t expect to see Vanessa Hudgens in a movie about an orgy anytime soon.
8. Olivia Wilde
While talking about her love scenes with Omar Epps on the medical drama House, Olivia Wilde revealed why there’s nothing hot about filming a lovemaking scene. Namely, the hairy crew members invading her personal space. Olivia jokes that there always seems to be a large and hairy man hovering somewhere above her face, holding a boom and wearing a crop top. What’s wrong with a crop top, you ask? Well, it exposes the hairy man’s hairy belly, which practically grazes Olivia’s face as he maneuvers the boom. You can’t blame her for not feeling in the mood for love under these circumstances.
7. Keira Knightley
Keira Knightley nearly turned down her role in the movie A Dangerous Method because she felt uncomfortable with filming a lovemaking scene involving spanking. Understandably, she was averse to the idea of said spanking scene living on the Internet forever. Director David Cronenberg convinced Keira that the spanking scene would be clinical and not sexy. So Keira downed some vodka and got down to the business of being “spanked.” She wasn’t really spanked; Michael Fassbender struck a box instead of her. That didn’t stop Keira from threatening Michael with broken legs if he accidentally touched her. She later celebrated with champagne at the thought of never having to film a spanking scene again.
6. Jamie Dornan
Poor Jamie Dornan. He really didn’t want to have to tie Dakota Johnson up in the Red Room in the movie Fifty Shades of Grey. Jamie isn’t afraid to admit that he didn’t like acting out the BDSM fantasies of his character Christian Grey. As he puts it, he was asked to do things to Dakota Johnson that he would never choose to do to a woman. I don’t blame him for feeling uncomfortable with filming BDSM-inspired lovemaking scenes. Need I remind everyone that sexual sadism and sexual masochism are paraphilias; they’re not common desires. At least Jamie made a lot of money for his trouble.
5. Dakota Johnson
It’s no wonder that I felt no chemistry between Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson while watching Fifty Shades of Grey when neither one of them was thrilled about filming the BDSM-inspired lovemaking scenes. Dakota explains that filming sex scenes in general is uncomfortable because it’s hot, in a sweaty kind of way. She admits to having felt emotionally drained after filming her nude scenes with Jamie Dornan. Think about it: she was blindfolded, had her hands and legs tied, and was hit by some sort of sex tool. If you’re not turned on by that kind of thing, then it must be a real chore.
4. Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman didn’t particularly enjoy filming her abusive sex scenes for the HBO limited series Big Little Lies. She hated these lovemaking scenes so much that she cried! Nicole explains that she felt exposed, vulnerable, and deeply humiliated by those scenes, similar to her character Celeste. After filming one especially difficult scene, Nicole couldn’t even get up off of the floor. She just lay there, crying, while director Jean-Marc Vallée placed a towel over her to cover her up. I watched Big Little Lies, and it was intense. I never realized, though, that it was this intense.
3. Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten Dunst had the privilege of acting out a steamy lovemaking scene with Colin Farrell in the movie The Beguiled, a movie which I’m dying to see. You might assume that she would be thinking about how lucky she is to share the screen with such a handsome fella, or that she would be worrying about making the scene convincing. But Kirsten’s only thought during filming was: “Are we done yet?” Apparently she didn’t enjoy having her clothes ripped off. Shocker. Kirsten just wanted the scene over with as quickly as possible. Luckily for her, she got her wish.
2. Charlie Hunnam
Did you know that Charlie Hunnam isn’t a fan of filming sex scenes? In fact, he secretly hates them. He has two reasons for loathing lovemaking scenes so. The first is his girlfriend’s antipathy towards them. Watching her boyfriend get hot and heavy with another woman isn’t high on her list of favourite things to do. The second reason is a little unusual. Charlie’s a germophobe. Yes, big bad Charlie Hunnam is afraid of germs. Getting nasty with a random woman is all kinds of gross to him. The last person I would compare Charlie Hunnam to is Howie Mandell, but life is full of surprises.
1. Lena Dunham
If you’ve watched Girls, then you know that Lena Dunham’s not shy about baring it all for the camera. Thanks to Girls, I’ve seen more of Lena’s body than I ever needed to see. Interestingly enough, Lena Dunham is less than enthused about filming lovemaking scenes. You wouldn’t know it from the sheer number of explicit scenes she stars in on Girls, but Lena feels as if she’s subjecting herself to sexual slavery whenever she acts in one. She just wants to get the scene over with. She wants out. Even though she’s the one who made the decision to include the racy scenes in the show in the first place.
