Ariel Winter was just 11 years old when she took on the role of Alex Dunphy in hit sit-com Modern Family. Any child actor will tell you that growing up in the spotlight isn’t easy, but Winter has had it particularly hard.

Now a 19-year-old woman, Winter has always been vocal about the importance of body confidence and isn’t afraid to show it, be it on a red carpet or to her 3.3 million followers on Instagram. Unfortunately for Winter, there are some members of society that take it upon themselves to drag her through the mud, no matter what she posts.

Just a quick look through the comments section on various photos will show you the shocking extent of how far internet trolls will go. Regardless of if it’s a dress they deem too sexy or a post they find too offensive, it seems that Winter is truly damned if she does and damned if she doesn’t.

In the wake of her latest photo controversy on Memorial Day 2017, I’ve trawled through Winter’s Instagram feed to find 15 times that she was shamed for her posts – and exactly what her followers had to say about it.

15. SHE’S ASKING FOR IT

Back in 2015, Winter posted a picture most of us wouldn’t blink an eye at. Herself and her two nieces smile side by side, enjoying a family day out on a boat. Some followers said that the photograph was inappropriate considering the situation. Her crime? Wearing a bikini on the same boat as children. Nasty comments flooded in, including some particularly vile trolls stating that Winter was being sexually provocative and ‘asking for it.’ Winter responded with a follow up picture and a statement – ‘Who knew that an innocent photo with my nieces would turn into this? The height of a girl’s skirt or whatever she is wearing for that matter, does not imply what she is asking for. It sickens me to think at 17 years old, a photo of myself with my nieces is suggesting that I’m ‘asking for it.’ APPLAUSE.

14. WHEN SHE HAD A BREAST REDUCTION

Newsflash – a woman’s shape changes as she grows older. Winter blossomed into a beautiful young woman. In the same year as bikini gate 2015, Ariel decided to undergo breast reduction surgery. At the time, she spoke candidly about the reduction, and continues to do so to encourage young women to do whatever they want to with their bodies that empowers them. Believe it or not, she even came under fire for her decision to undergo the operation. As her breasts have always garnered a lot of attention in the press and media, fans thought that she had bowed in to pressure and had the reduction to avoid the hateful comments. In fact, her 32F ‘assets’ were causing her physical pain and she made the decision to reduce them for a better quality of life.

13. SHE WORE A BIKINI…ON MEMORIAL DAY

As recently as May 2017, Winter posted a picture of herself on a beach with the caption ‘Happy #memorialday’. Many of her followers thought this was inappropriate given that the day is in honor of the many serviceman who have died serving their country. Some people accused her of using the opportunity to self promote and post half naked pictures – ‘What has that got to do with Memorial Day? Just an excuse to get half naked.’ Winter did follow up the picture with another, thanking all servicemen. ‘Could not be more grateful to all of the men and women who risk their lives to protect ours and our freedom,’ she wrote alongside a graphic thanking America’s soldiers. ‘We are all forever indebted to your service. Thank you.’ A PR save or a heartfelt thank you? We’ll never know.

12. NIGHT OUT = ADULT STAR

In February 2017, Winter posted this picture of herself on a night out with friends. Her revealing outfit caused quite a stir, even though, let’s face it – you really can’t see anything. It was quickly the subject of many gossip columns and it wasn’t long before other media outlets picked it up in yet another ‘Ariel Shows Some Skin’ story. Some followers even wondered about her future career, ‘But to be honest with you, I’m still [wondering] if @arielwinter is an actress or future porn star showing her body and butt to the world. I mean, COME ON PEOPLE.’ No stranger to scrutiny, Winter didn’t address the comments on this occasion.

11. THE TIME SHE DRESSED UP

This time, it wasn’t that she showed any skin, but that she had supposedly misjudged the tone of the occasion. According to critics, she should have dressed in the same style as everyone else – and because she dared to be different, she was at fault. Her cast mates at the event were dressed down in smart casual, where Winter went for a more revealing and glamorous ensemble. She put trolls in their places with a deserved response after posting this photo, slamming people shaming her for her outfit choices in an attempt to make her appear attention seeking. YAS QUEEN.

10. THIS MEME OF OBAMA AND BIDEN

The bromance between former president Barack Obama and former vice president Joe Biden has graced us with many a great meme. Ariel is no stranger to the endearing friendship, sharing this snap when they left The White House in January this year. Oddly, it wasn’t a total hit with her followers, with some giving her a slap on the wrist for sharing a post with profanities. Comments like, ‘Language!!! I’m not even in my teens!!!’ came from her younger fan base as well as others who thought it was inappropriately mocking the state of political affairs.

9. HAPPY BIRTHDAY BURT REYNOLDS

Earlier this year, Ariel dared to say happy birthday to screen icon Burt Reynolds by sharing a picture of the two actors hand in hand. The young starlet is wearing a crop top and short black hot pants which led some followers to denounce her for showing one of Hollywood’s finest a ‘lack of respect’ – ‘If he’s such a legend, maybe you should’ve dressed a little more respectfully. You’re body is rockin, but that outfit is inappropriate.’ Fans were quick to jump to her defense, letting naysayers know that the picture was taken during filming of the 2017 movie Dog Days.

8. BODY POSITIVITY GETS NEGATIVE COMMENTS

In October 2016 Ariel shared a picture of Instagram user @jdoday in partnership with Seventeen magazine’s body confidence movement #perfectlyme. Unfortunately for the poor girl in question, a war erupted in the comments, with many users disputing why Ariel would support an ‘unhealthy lifestyle.’ The comments were rude, nasty and downright hurtful. One user simply said, ‘Feminism is cancer’, with another stating – ‘Why are people glamorizing unhealthy life styles like this chick? Seriously that isn’t attractive at all.’ Winter was dragged through the mud and accused of promoting bad lifestyle choices under the guise of body positivity.

7. ARE THEY DATING OR NOT?

This innocent post of Winter with her co-star Nolan Gould who plays her onscreen brother garnered speculation that the two may be dating. A string of lewd comments presented themselves, like ‘I bet they’ve f***ed, he has that twinkle in his eye like yeah I hit that shit.’ Some users even hit out at Winter’s troubled relationship with her parents, whom she became legally emancipated from in 2015, saying ‘When you were under 18 you blamed your parents for “making you dress sexy”. Now that your 18 do they still dress you or is it your choice to dress like a whore?’ There’s not a lot that is right with the comment section of this photo, with many calling her derogatory names or offering themselves up in less than gentlemanly ways.

6. HAPPY BIRTHDAY KHLOE KARDASHIAN

This time last year, in June 2016, Winter shared this snap of Khloe Kardashian to wish the reality star a happy birthday. Critics of Winter often slam her for being a ‘wannabe Kardashian’, as her dark tresses and belfie snaps are similar in style to the aesthetic of the famous clan. The comments on the post were less than complimentary of the Kardashian sister, with some tearing Winter down for her admiration of Khloe. ‘She’s all FAKE’, ‘Disgusting pig’, ‘Inappropriate! Not in the same breath. Ariel you are so much more beautiful and relevant’, were among some of the things her followers had to say. It seems that Ariel can’t even say happy birthday to a fellow celeb without getting backlash.

5. THIS PHOTO ABOUT SCHOOL DRESS CODE

Winter has always been outspoken on her opinions of how women should be able to dress how they like and still be treated with respect. This snap of a sign detailing the impact it has on a young woman when she is penalized for dress code violations kicked up quite a stir. Many users disagreed with Ariel, claiming that school is a place of learning and that girls should learn to ‘dress with self-respect.’ Although some were quick to disagree, claiming that boys should be taught not to sexualize girls, there were still some stinkers in the comments section, like this one – ‘And also you can’t teach boys not to look at women “sexually” they are visual creatures by nature and its up to the girl to show some self-respect and dress appropriately for a school environment like jfc…’

4. THIS PHOTO WITH HER CAST MATES

The line between reality and fiction can be a little blurry for some people – especially when it comes to cast mates who play family members. Ariel posted this picture back in May 2016, pre-breast reduction. It’s every woman’s right to wear what she wants – unfortunately for Ariel, she often gets unwanted negative attention for it, especially before her operation. The comments are obscene, with one user asking her, ‘Are you trying to get f***ed?’ and another dragging her for her attire, ‘Are u serious? Dont u think ure showin a lil too much boob lol wtf’ [sic]. Other followers couldn’t get past the fact that she was sat next to her onscreen brother and cousin dressed in such an ‘inappropriate’ fashion, with some deeming it creepy. Is it really though?

3. WHEN SHE SHADED CHLOE MORETZ

In May last year Ariel took to Instagram to share her thoughts on an interview actress Chloe Moretz did with Glamour Magazine. Moretz slammed Kim Kardashian for her naked selfies, saying that it sets the wrong example for young women. Body positivity advocate Winter defended Kimmy K in this post, where she encouraged young women to do what they feel they want to do, regardless of anyone else. This statement sent punches flying in the comments, with many Kardashian haters shaming Ariel for supporting Kim. One user wrote, ‘I’m disappointed with your thoughts Ariel.. I agree, Kim k stands for nothing and the body image was fake [sic]. She’s does nothing to promote women to be appreciated for their minds. As for equality when a male or even other females post sexy pics they stand for something else too. Trash posting nudes and photoshopped really has no value. Smh.’

2. LASHES FOR LASHES

This very recent snap posted just a few days ago on May 28th caused a ruckus – yep, over eyelash extensions. Some followers slammed Ariel for her choice in lashes, calling her out on the size of them and comparing her to Kylie Jenner. Some thought it was hilarious and told her she looked ridiculous, with others even hating on her eyebrows, suggesting she needed to get them waxed. It can’t be easy for Winter to read comments like this when she is a role model for body confidence. Although, with the amount of hate she gets over every aspect of her appearance, she probably has skin tougher than a T-Rex.

1. NOT VERY BUNNY

What can people possibly blast Ariel for now, you ask? Well, if you thought a cute little pink bunny couldn’t incite fury, you’re wrong. Just a few short months ago in March 2017, Ariel shared this picture of an Instagram page that she seemingly created for her pink bunny toy, Cher. People were quick to jump on her, surmising that it was actually a key chain made in Hong Kong out of real rabbit fur. Although a lot of people were quick to point out that it wasn’t real fur, it was too late and the animal rights activists were out in force.
